Dr. Alok Kumar Performs First Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy at Baptist DeSoto
Officials at Baptist DeSoto hospital have expressed great excitement over the addition of a new service known as laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy.
MEMPHIS, TN August 05, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to Randy King, Administrator and CEO of Baptist DeSoto: "We are pleased to be able to offer the women of DeSoto County and the surrounding area a minimally invasive surgery that allows a quick recovery."
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a procedure performed with the aid of a slender optical tube known as a laparoscope. The procedure begins with a short incision just below the navel, through which the laparoscope is inserted. After the physician has examined the pelvic area through the laparoscope, additional incisions are made through which surgical instruments are introduced. Using the laparoscope to guide him, the physician then cuts the uterus away from the body, and into small strips which can be removed through the abdominal incisions. Once the entire organ has been removed, only a few small stitches are needed to repair the incisions.
According to Dr. Alok Kumar, who recently performed Baptist DeSoto's first ever laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy: "Although this procedure involves a longer operating time and greater surgical skill, it provides the advantage of a return home within 24 hours, and a return to normal activities within two to four weeks. Traditional abdominal hysterectomies, however, involve a large incision, a higher degree of pain in recovery, and at least a six-week recovery time."
Dr. Kumar joined the Southaven office of Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC (MOGA) in February of this year. He has a special interest in performing minimally invasive surgical procedures which decrease postoperative pain and recovery times for patients. Prior to coming to MOGA, he served as an Associate Physician with Chesapeake Women's Care in Annapolis, MD. He is a graduate of Memphis' own White Station High School, as well as Duke University. He attended medical school at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. During his schooling, he was recognized by the University of Tennessee as the best resident in maternal fetal medicine, and as the best student during his OB/GYN clerkship. Additionally, he was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity, where he served as president for two years and vice-president for one.
Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC is one of the largest providers of women's healthcare in the Memphis area, with offices at St. Francis-Bartlett, Methodist-Germantown, Baptist Women's Hospital, and in Southaven.
