Southwind Medical Specialists Receives Accreditation for Nuclear Laboratory
The nuclear cardiology department of Southwind Medical Specialists, located in Memphis, TN, has received accreditation from the Intersocietal Comission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL).

MEMPHIS, TN, April 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The ICANL provides a peer review mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality nuclear cardiology and nuclear medicine diagnostic evaluations by a process of voluntary accreditation. The ICANL is dedicated to ensuring high quality patient care and to promoting health care. Accreditation by ICANL signifies that the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency that recognizes the laboratory's commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.

According to statistics from the ICANL, one American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing society over 83.7 billion dollars each year in health services, medications, and lost work time.

Nuclear cardiology evaluates the heart at rest and during exercise using a small amount of radioisotope during the non-invasive procedure. It relies on the experience and training of both the physician and technologist.

Located on Winchester at Champion Hills Drive near the Collierville line in Memphis, with a smaller office on Sanderlin Street in east Memphis, Southwind Medical Specialists is the home of nine physicians and two nurse practitioners. Specialties of the physicians include internal medicine, pediatrics, family practice, and gastroenterology. With the variety of specialties, the practice has been able to develop other new services on the ancillary side as well. According to Kevin Rando, who oversees the practice's ancillary services: "We've been able to distinguish ourselves from other practices by including services that are not normally provided within a primary care office. Among these services are echocardiography, carotid dopplers, urodynamics, and 24-hour holter monitors. We also staff two full time physical therapists, as well as providing our accredited nuclear medicine department.
