New York Massage Therapist Finds Path to Greater Mobility Without Pain Through Rolfing - Lengthening of Connective Tissues
Richard Condon has been a Licensed Massage Therapist and instructor for almost 20 years, but since 2001 has been a Certified Rolfer, allowing people greater mobility, flexibility and less pain after he engages the network of connective tissue surrounding every part of the human body.

GARDINER, NY, October 22, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- While Massage has been around for centuries, the relatively new modality of Rolfing was only introduced about 60 years ago, and is becoming increasingly sought after as people experience its benefits.

What is Rolfing?

Rolfing works with the fascia—or connective tissue—which is a strong, fabric-like substance that is ubiquitous throughout the body and ties all the elements of the body into a structural whole. "The fascia is arranged in broad sheets, which can become twisted, shortened and stuck to neighboring sheets. Think of it as analogous to your shirt," explains Rolfing practitioner Richard Condon. "When your arm rests at your side the fabric of your sleeve creases at the armpit. If these creases became struck, then your ability to fully raise your arm is compromised, and you might well experience shoulder pain."

Through careful assessment-- visual, functional and tactile, Rolfing finds and releases these problematic areas. To do so it uses specific, directional pressure, active and passive client movements and client education in areas such as proper sitting and habits of movement. "When I became a Rolfer I inherited a lot more tools for my toolbox," says Condon. "I can intervene in my clients' process far more subtly, and at the same time they realize more profound results. I not only work with clients on the table, but also with them sitting and walking. Rolfing is about creating a right relationship to gravity, so that it actually supports the body, instead of tugging on it, fatiguing it. Gravity is our constant companion; why not make friends with it?"

Initially called Structural Integration, students soon coined the name Rolfing in deference to their teacher, Dr. Ida Rolf.

What disorganizes the fascia to begin with?

Falls, sports injuries, car accidents are all inclined to leave restricted fascia in their wake. Less obvious causes include repetitive habits of movement, such as always standing with more weight on a particular leg or sitting turned toward one side to see the computer.

What are the benefits of Rolfing?

Tim Thackery, the 2000 US National Tae Kwon Do Champion, has enjoyed the benefits of Rolfing since he was 13.

"My posture has dramatically improved. My stance is firm. Not only has [Rolfing] given me a mental advantage, it has increased my breathing capacity, improved my range of motion, and I am more flexible. These are all qualities critical to becoming a winner in the Tae Kwon Do sport."
